Lee County Florida Selects NPT and Serenic Navigator

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (August 4, 2004) -- Serenic Software, Inc., a developer of accounting software for not for-profit organizations (NFPs) and government agencies, today announced that the Tax Collector¹s Office of Lee County, Fla., has selected Serenic Navigator as its fund accounting software. The total purchase includes 15 concurrent licenses of Serenic Navigator and customization servicesNonProfit Technologies, Inc., a West Palm Beach, Fla.-based reseller of Serenic Navigator, is the local Serenic partner responsible for winning the contract with the Lee County Tax Collector (LCTC). NonProfit Technologies and LCTC are currently in the process of implementing the software, with a projected ³live² date in October 2004.Located in southwestern Florida, Lee County encompasses some 804 square miles and has a population of more than 500,000.The Lee County Tax Collector¹s office was established in 1885 by the Florida State Constitution. It was based on the idea that local taxes could be best collected at the local level. By being an elected officer, it was believed the Tax Collector would be more responsive to the needs of the community in which he or she was elected. The Tax Collector runs on a partisan ticket, and is elected every four years with no limit on the amount of terms served.

Although the revenues collected are mostly taxes, the 190-person Tax Collector's office is not funded with tax dollars. It is a fee-based office. The fees collected for the services provided are used to fund the operating budget.A wide range of services are provided by the Tax Collector including collection of property taxes; motor vehicle, vessel, mobile home, and recreational vehicle registrations; title applications; collection of sales tax in relationship to these transactions; issuance of hunting and fishing licenses; and issuance of occupational licenses.According to Richard Passera, accounting director of the Lee County Tax Collector¹s office, a desire for modernization was the key factor behind the choice of Serenic Navigator. ³The fund accounting software we had been using was not current or flexible, and it lacked human resources and inventory control functionality,² he said. ³Of the 13 packages we evaluated, Serenic Navigator was the most robust, user-friendly and flexible.² ³While we are very strong in the not-for-profit sector, we have made a concerted effort to increase our market share in the government sector,² said Jay Malik, Serenic¹s president and chief executive officer. ³Today¹s announcement is evidence that we are making great progress.²
